Kārlis Padegs

Jānis Kalnačs

The series „Classics of Latvian Art” presents a book about the most stylish and defiant artist of 1930s Riga, Kārlis Padegs (1911–1940) .

Almost every work by the artist incorporates something that is slightly wrong, and it is in fact this deliberately distorted quality that renders his work so intriguing and poignant, reflecting the uncertain and unpredictable nature of the world. Not the more or less stable reality, but the emotional world, including disappointment and unattainable illusions. (..) At the same time Padegs’ art expresses an unmistakable striving for harmony, something thta can rarely be achieved either in reality or in flights of imagination.
