Sigismunds Vidbergs

Marita Bērziņa

The series „Classics of Latvian Art” presents a book about stylistically refined, elegant Latvian graphic artist Sigismunds Vidbergs (1890–1970).

Within the vivid array of 20th century Latvian graphic artists, Sigismunds Vidbergs is distinguished by his contemporary perception and depiction of the world, his capacity for bringing together current trends and classical values in art.

His pen and ink drawings, stylistically refined and technically perfect, are the hallmark of his graphic art.

Apart from drawings and prints created as autonomous works, Vidbergs also contributed to many other forms of art, producing book illustrations, posters, caricatures, bookplates and company logos. In addition, he worked in stained glass, porcelain painting, textile design, set and costume design, as well as teaching.

The artist addressed a wide range of subjects: historical and contemporary motifs, urban and rural life, religious scenes, portraits, studies of architecture and nature. However, Vidbergs is best known in the general panorama of Latvian art for his elegant interpretations of erotic motifs, retaining a classical sense of measure even when addressing very risqué themes. The imagery he created places him among Latvia’s most important Art Deco artists.

The series „Classics of Latvian Art” includes books of medium size, offering an easily perceptible information about Latvian classical artists and their works. Similar to the „STUDIJA Library” the series „Classics of Latvian Art” is intended as bilingual (Latvian/English), richly illustrated publications. An attractive supplement at the end of each book is a timeline where the life of Latvian artists can be viewed within the context of world events, revealing connections, parallels or just interesting coincidences.
